A messenger in a shared tradition
Islam places Muhammad, peace be upon him, in the line of prophets that includes Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Muslims believe he called people to worship the one God, act justly, and prepare for accountability in the life to come. Quran 33:40 describes him as the seal of the prophets.
The Quran and his mission
Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to Muhammad in Arabic. His task was to convey its message and demonstrate how to live by it. In Islamic belief, he was a human messenger, and worship is directed to God alone.
Learning about his mission begins with understanding that distinction between honoring a prophet and worshiping the Creator.
Learning about his life
Accounts of the Prophet's life are known as seerah. They describe his life in Makkah, the migration to Madinah, and the community that developed around his message. Reading a clear biography helps place events and teachings in their historical setting.
What are hadith and sunnah?
Hadith are reports of his sayings, actions, and approvals. Sunnah refers to his example and way of life. Muslim scholarship examines reports and their transmission; a quotation should be considered with attention to its source, reliability, and context.
For a new reader, it is helpful to use explained collections and ask a qualified teacher about passages that need clarification.
From knowledge to character
Muslims seek to follow the Prophet through worship and through qualities such as truthfulness, patience, generosity, and care for others. Saying “peace be upon him” after his name is an expression of respect and prayer.
If you have heard a claim about Muhammad, bring the specific quotation or event to the conversation. We welcome careful questions and the opportunity to look at sources together.
Read in context: Quran 33:40 and Quran 2:285.
